Polhena is situated just 6 Kms (4 Miles) away from Matara and 160 kms (100 Miles) south of Colombo in the Dondra Bay at the southern tip of Sri Lanka. The name Polhena is derived from the Sinhalese word for the Coconut Field "Pol" "Hena". Compared to the other famous beaches Polhena beach is relatively a small beach. Polhena is famous among the local and foreign tourists because of its calm waters. Protected by a reef, the waters form a shallow natural pool, perfect for children and families.
At the beach, there are vendors offering buoys and goggles for snorkeling and there is a lifeguard booth and a police station. In the surroundings, there is a small temple and a few hotels and restaurants. It is also a good beach to stop at for a while to 'chill out' and enjoy the sea views.
